Recipe's preparation

    Making Pomegranate Juice
  1. Obtain Pomegranate seeds.

There are a number of ways to get the seeds out of a pomegranate.

    a) Whack the heck out of it (perfect results for presenting for salads

    b) Underwater Method,

    c) Precision quartering and separating or

    d) Use the Thermomix to deseed it for you //www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwueEQotfHk

I prefer the whack the heck out if it method. The underwater method takes time and your hands may end up pruned. The precision cutting method takes some skill and time to cut up all the sections of the pomegranate and can be messy.

The general gist of the whack the heck out of it method goes like this:

Get a sharp knife and score the skin 360 around the Pomegranate starting from the top, going to the bottom, then back to the top.

Starting from the top, gently pry the pomegranate into to 2 halves.

Loosely hold the pomegranate in one hand with the cut site facing your hand (skin side facing up). Hold your hand above a large bowl. Now depending how heavy your knife is and how hard you are willing to hit, use the back of the knife or handle of the knife and repeatedly hit the outside of the pomegranate until all the seeds fall out. Search YouTube for video demonstration.

  2. Once all seeds have been whacked out of the pomegranates or you have obtained pomegranate seeds by some other means, you will have a large bowl of pomegranate seeds.

  3. Put seeds into Thermomix bowl

  4. Speed 8, 30 sec Counter-clockwise operation"Counter-clockwise operation" . The blunt edge of the blades will ensure the seeds are not cut open.

  5. Check the consistency. Depending on how many pomegranates are put in at one time you may have to increase the time to make sure all the pomegranates are fully mashed.

  6. Pour the mixture into a strainer and stir it around a little to let all the liquid drip into the bowl below.

  7. DONE!

Make a Sorbet; add to Yoghurt; add some ice and drink it, its up to you.

Tip

Note: Do Not try using a juicer. A high speed juicer will quickly clog up with the mashed seeds and you will end up with tart juice. You will likely break your slow press juicer as the seeds will compress and not exit the pulp shoot and if you keep going break your juicer. If you use a standard blender/food processor you risk cutting the seeds open and ending up with cloudy juice that is not as good.

If you would like to grow your own tree, instead of throwing out the seeds, take a dozen, put them in some wet paper towel or perlite and put in a zip lock bag to germinate. (use 6% hydrogen peroxide solution for best results)

I made this today but the first batch the seeds were cut up too much. I then did 300gm seeds at a time speed 5 reverse for 15 seconds. Perfect.

What an excellent way to get something out of pomegranates! We have just planted a tree, but wasn't sure what we will be doing with the fruit as we don't fancy eating the seeds. Thanks so much for sharing.

Pomegranates are a rich source of antioxidents... making them great for reducing blood sugars in persons who are Diabetic (type 2)... the added bonus of this recipe is no need to add sugar... brilliant idea.  tmrc_emoticons.)
