Forum Mashed potatoes dont work :(
Hi,
Firstly I would make sure you use a Ruby Lou or the Purple skinned potatoes as these are best for mashing.
For such a small quantity I would probably steam in the basket then when fully cooked tip all the water out and put the butterfly in and put the potatoes in the bowl. Add a small amount of milk, butter, salt to your preference and mix on 1 or maybe 2 for short time. I'd probably check every 5 seconds.

I think may husband made a smaller amount the other day as we only had a few potatoes left. He has no idea what he did differently, but I suspect that he slowed down the speed to . You could also try
. This would make for a gentler cooking phase and the potatoes wouldn't break apart so much. Make sure the potatoes are well cooked before mashing and mash for less time than the book says - maybe 10 seconds at a time. From memory, the potatoes were well mashed by the time we got to the mashing stage and only took about 5 seconds on speed 3. Another thing to check is the variety of potatoe you have used as some don't mash well at all. If you are buying from a supermarket, potatoes are usually marked as good for mashing or roasting or just check on the internet for the best varieties for mashing.
I don't think mashed pototoe freezes very well, but you could try that too.
Hope they work for you next time
What about this: steam the cubed potato in the rice basket, then empty out the water, insert the butterfly, add the steamed potato, milk and butter, and whip it up on speed 4? Maybe that would work?
I dont think it really works for less than 500g. Have you tried making the full amount and freezing some?
I have never had a problem but I usually make at least 500gm of mash at one time. I use the Nico's method from the Nico's entertaining booklet. You will get a glue like consistency if your potato is not fully cooked. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Hi,
I cant get a small amount of mashed potatoe to work.
I only ever want to make it for one, so a medium potato only.
I have tried making it with the milk like in the EDC but it turns to glue.
I have tried steaming the potatoes in the basket, and then mashing them with the attachment on speed 4 for about 20 seconds. This just turned it into a 'soup' type thin mixture.
Any ideas?
