Forum Grinding spices
This might help- not mine but found it in my travels:
- you do need a certain amount of spices in your Thermomix to actually grind them properly. 1/2 a teaspoon just isn't enough to weigh the spices down enough to grind! They just get thrown up because of the speed of the blades. I know when I do cinnamon sticks (for example) I need 4 or 5 for them to grind properly. 3 nutmegs, 1/4 of a cup of lighter things like chia seeds or celery seeds""

I agree with you Magda I find this very frustrating - at the demo they ground up 1clove garlic but my machine just pushes it up to top. I made a curry paste tonight with coriander , basil and lemon grass and it didnt do a good job, it ended up being very stringy no matter how many times I scraped the bowl. Kept mt mortar and pestle, could have chopped it myself quicker.
magda for the smaller amounts, try grinding with a little rock salt added. You would normally add salt at some point? I find this helps
I want to grind to a fine powder and usually do whatever quantities a particular recipe requires. The other day I was trying to make a curry paste which started with a 2 teaspoons of cumin and 2.5 teaspoons of coriander seeds. the recipe (it's on this forum) said to grind on speed 10 for 10 seconds only. This didn't work. I then tried going for a minute at a time on speed 10 and they remained completely whole! I have tried many times with different quantities and have never had a satisfactory result. And every time these were "thermomix recipes" which actually made me wonder if there is something wrong with my thermomix?
Hi magda11
How are you wanting to grind them, chunky or fine? And what quantities are you trying to do? I find it works well for most things. Hopefully I can help once you give us some more information.

Hi everyone. I love my thermomix but very disappointed that it does not grind spices the way it was represented by my consultant. I gave away my mortar and pestle and now wish I hadn't. I know some of the hints are to grind large quantities (what;s the point? thw whole idea is to grind fresh as needed) or to get it going and throw the seeds onto already spinning blades (no difference in my experience). have others also given up on using the Tmx for this purpose and gone back to their mortar and pestle? or has someone actually found the answer to this problem?
