Ingredients

Dry Ingredients (can make in bulk, as listed, and store in an airtight container)

  • 4 tablespoons rolled oats
  • 4 tablespoons quinoa grains
  • 2 tablespoons almonds (roasted or plain raw)
  • 1.5 tablespoons macadamia nuts
  • 1.5 tablespoons cashew nuts
  • 2 tablespoons Linseeds
  • 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons organic coconut (no preservatives)
  • 2 tablespoons Goji Berries
  • 2 tablespoons amaranth grains (optional)

'Wet' Ingredients (this is enough for a double serve)

  • 2 small pears (or 1 large pear)
  • 1 peach
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 prune, pitted
  • 1/4 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 2 drops vanilla essence
  • 160 grams full-cream milk

Recipe's preparation

  1. 1. Place all the 'Dry Ingredients' as listed, into the TM bowl and mill for 20-30 seconds, speed 8.

     

    2. Empty the contents of the TM bowl into an air-tight container for storage. This should make at least 16 serves (8 double serves), depending on your serving size (how many tablespoons you use when cooking it in the next section).

     

    I PREPARE A DOUBLE SERVE EVERY SECOND MORNING, GIVING ONE TO MY BABY IMMEDIATELY AND THE SECOND SERVE IS REFRIDGERATED FOR THE FOLLOWING DAY (AT WHICH POINT IT IS MICROWAVED FOR 1 MINUTE).

     

    DOUBLE SERVE:

    1. Place 3 tablespoons of pre-prepared milled muesli mix into the TM bowl.

    2. Add 'wet' ingredients, as listed. I interchange some of the fruit ingredients from time to time to add variety, but tend to use pears as a base as my baby prefers these. I always include one prune.

    3. Cook at 100 degrees for 8 minutes on speed 2.

    4. Puree for 20 seconds on speed 8.

    5. Pour into two dishes (I use pyrex dishes with lids) so one can be served immediately (as soon as it is cool enough for your baby) and the other refridgerated for breakfast the following day.

     

    You can add more milk into the individual serving dish if need to cool it down quickly or you feel it is too thick. Alternatively you can try adding some organic yoghurt (5am natural yoghurt is my favourite). 

     

    I recommend using roughly (slightly over) 2.5 times the amount of milk as you do the dry ingredients so if you use 3 tablesppons of dry ingredients (60g), I use 160g milk. Any less and it is really thick, a lot more and it is quite runny.

     

    Other fruit I sometimes add include: blueberries, raspberries, figs, apricots, apple.

     

     

Tip

Please note that picture provided was after my 10 month old had demolished 3/4 of her serve and I remembered that I wanted a picture!

 

Also note, only include nuts in the mix if you have already tested them on your baby and know she/he has no allergies to nuts. I started giving my baby this muesli after 8 months, slowly adding more ingredients (mainly as I didn't have my TM before this time). I would suggest a minimum age to be 6 months and only after nuts have been tested, or just leave these out in the interim.

    Bub loves it! We try different fruit combos and works well. At first I thought the portions will be too big, but LO cleans the plate! I'm also loving the fact there's so much goodness in this muesli and I know exactly what bub gets! Thank you for sharing!

    Hi Michelle, did you just simply soak the oats overnight, then add the dry ingredients in a bowl (or TM reverse blade) and stir together, then add yoghurt (without actually cooking any of the ingredients)?

    I am so sorry I never responded to your question as I forgot to ask to be notified of any comments, so didn't realise you had commented. I have never frozen these serves, but I assume it should be ok. I know that it does thicken on standing, so you would want to be sure you didn't fill the container to the brim when putting it in the freezer, and like anything else, put it in the fridge to cool before placing it in the freezer. Let me know if you did end up freezing it as I cooked this every two days (milled up the whole lot with enough to last for a month or so - never counted!) and used half immediately and the second half the following day, so never froze it. 

    I have since changed it up a bit too. Tried some without quinoa, some without chia and quinoa, some without seeds/nuts ro reduce my daughter's fibre intake. Sometimes I added cranberries with the banana. Sometimes I put a touch of maple syrup in after cooking before pureeing. These days I also cook the porridge for 10mins, then add banana / cranberries / mixed spice / occasional maple syrup and puree it for about 10-12 seconds on speed 8-9. That way the banana isn't unnecessarily cooked. Always smells divine.

    I have also done some 'plain' porridge with rolled oats, coconut, millet, cranberries, banana, milk, mixed spice and a touch of maple syrup.

    Also, my serves were quite large! But my bubba had a huge appetite, so she mostly ate every drop. 

    One more thing! I have also tended to add more milk once it has cooked and pureed, to each serve just before serving, which acts to cool it down, and also to thin it out a little as the oats/quinoa/chia definitely absorb a lot of liquid. These days I add about 200ml milk to each double serve during the cooking process, and a little more to each serve.

    Just made my first batch of this and it smells divine! Will see how bub likes it tomorrow morning. Does anyone have any idea if it will freeze ok? I've made a bit more than 2 serves.

    Oh Michelle that sounds a great idea! Do you mean you milled the 'dry ingredients' minus the oats, then mixed the soaked oats to that, added the 'wet ingredients', cooked it then served with a bit of yoghurt? Or did you just add the milled ingredients your soaked oats, then mix in some yoghurt and serve? I might try pre-soaking the oats for a bit of texture and chewing! If you were to add these back into the thermomix, and wanted to have texture, you would have to mix on reverse speed but that would mean that your fruit wouldn't puree so maybe you would just add some banana or something instead of hard fruit like pear, if serving to a baby. But you did mention toddler, so you probably don't need to puree anyway! My toddler is super fussy so if I wanted to add any fruit to his porridge I would need to hide it. He loves fruit, but not big chunks in his porridge! Thanks for posting your idea!
