Recipe's preparation

  1. Add peeled fruit to TM bowlFill a large glass ( approx 400-500ml capacity) with ice blocks, top it up with water, then add to the bowlAdd kale and blend for 1.5 -2 mins on speed 8-9

The addition of ice helps to incorporate the fibre from the citrus and kale into the liquid, and gives it a beautiful creamy top when you pour it out, reminds of the top you get on a Guinness.Taste before you consider adding sweetener, because depending how big your lemons and mandarins/oranges are, you may not need it.

If you are new to green smoothies then go easy on the amount of kale to start with, and as you get used to adding greens to your smoothie, you will naturally add more till it is about 40% greens and 60% fruit

Tip

Kale is an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C and manganese. It is also a very good source of dietary fiber, copper, calcium, vitamin B6 and potassium.Vit C (in the kale and citrus) are known as potentially anti-cancer agents, and the Sulforaphane, which is formed when cruciferous vegetables such as kale are chopped or chewed (or blended), triggers the liver to produce enzymes that detoxify cancer-causing chemicals, inhibits chemically-induced breast cancers in animal studies, induces colon cancer cells to commit suicide. Cool huh!

If you're new to kale, try kale chips or kale soup (caldo verde) from the Portugal Thermomix recipe book. You'll love kale even more!  tmrc_emoticons.;)

Finally got around to making this today...oh yum!  My daughter and I had never had kale before (in any form), we didn't know what to expect...but what an amazing flavour it gives to this juice.  I didn't have mardarins so I used 3 lemons and 3 oranges, got 3 medium sized glasses from it.  Thanks so much for sharing, and it will be a regular must-make in our household.

Hopefully since you left your comment you have located Kale on the Gold Coast. My brother buys it at Woolies at Southport.

Kale is actually a winter crop and is related to the cabbage family. In hindsight it was silly of me to post this recipe in summer!! Kale is surprisingly mild even though it looks so green. Silverbeet and spinach are great greens that are readily available alot of the time however they are not as nutritious as kale. Using parsley is incredible nutrition wise, however the flavour can be strong. Really goes well with the citrus though. Have fun experimenting Love

You should speak to your local fruit and veg people and see if they will order it for you. Otherwise, try this with Silver beet leaves or for a milder taste, English spinach.
