Ingredients
Dough
- 50 g sugar
- 150 g Milk
- 2 tsp dry yeast
- 50 g Butter, cubed
- 350 g '00' flour
- 1 egg yolk
- pinch salt
- 1 Beaten Egg, for glazing
- icing sugar, to dust
Filling
- 250 g poppy seeds
- peel from half a lemon
- 250 g icing sugar
- 1 sachet vanilla sugar
- 80 g honey
- 100 g Milk

Add sugar, milk, yeast and butter to bowl and mix 2 min/37C/speed 1 or until butter is melted
Add flour, egg yolk and salt and knead 2 min/"Closed lid" /"Dough mode"
Turn dough out onto ThermoMat and roll into a ball. Place into a large bowl and cover with a tea towel and allow to prive until doubled in size
Add poppy seeds and lemon peel into bowl and grind 1 min/speed 9, scraping down bowl half way through
Add icing sugar, vanilla sugar and honey and mix 40 sec/speed 7 or until ingredients are well combined. Transfer poppy seed mix to a separate bowl
Heat milk 2 min/90C/speed 1 and stir just enough hot milk into poppy seed mixture to moisten (you may not need to use it all)
Roll dough into a 50cm x 36cm rectangle and spread out poppy seed filling, leaving a 1cm border around the edge
Roll up dough tightly lengthways and bring ends together to make a circle
Cover cake with a tea towel and allow to rise for half an hour
Brush with beaten egg and bake in preheated 180C oven for 25 minutes or until golden and cooked through
Allow cake to cool then dust with icing sugar to serve

Tip
During baking some filling may come out, just remove excess filling once cool before serving.
This cake is traditionally served at Christmas time in Hungary.

Hi Mel192! Thanks for your feedback and glad to hear you loved the pastry! You're right there is a whole lot of sugar in the filling but that's how the Hungarians like it - ultra sweet! hehe You can definitely cut back the sugar and/or honey and it will still taste amazing. This recipe has been adapated from a traditional one so didn't want to alter the sugar amount.
Pastry is great. Way too much sugar in the filling. Next time will just try with the honey and leave the sugar out.
