As a mum of a pink loving daughter I couldnt wait to make a natural pink food colouring. It was even easier then I'd expected thanks to my Thermomix!
This recipe makes nearly a cup and around 1/2 teaspoon will colour a batch of icing.
It has a slightly sweet, subtle taste and could be added to both sweet or savoury baking/cooking.
If you're wondering what to do with the leftover boiled beetroot..you could try my beetroot cupcakes

I would also like to know how long it keeps for?
How long does this keep for once made? And it would need to be kept in the fridge I presume? Looks awesome cant wait to try. Thanks!
You can use a smaller amount of beet root - just add the same amount of water. Use more sugar for more of a syrup consistency. If you are not planning on using the beet root (once cooked) in another recipe you can chop on speed 7 and leave off reverse - to extract more juice.

Glad you like it! I try to avoid additives/colors for my kids for similar reasons. You can use this basic recipe/concept for other colors. Any brightly (staining) food will work - kale/spinach, blueberries/raspberries. Add water to JUST cover the fruit/veg & add sugar or vanilla to taste (more for strong flavours). Ground Turmeric can be directly added to cake or icing, for yellow. Just be sure to sweeten/flavour accordingly. Hope this helps

This is great!! My nearly three year old sufferes from asthma, and we have begun to notice links between additives and preservatives as inducing an episode. It is also proving difficult as he is starting to get invited to birthday parties, where there is an unlimited supply of lollies chips etc. If you have anymore natural food colouring recipes, could you please let me know??!!
Thanks
Thanks Kate. This recipe got me thinking and I looked into food dyes and colouring... nasty nasty stuff. So I'll be using your recipe to make my own from now on
