OMG just discovered this cake. I've never found a tea cake I've loved since my Nanas. I doubled it as some else shared in comments and it was so good. Had to stop myself from eating too much before the family come home. Thankyou
I have made this twice this week - and today Im doubling the batter, I put some cinnamon in the cake and my house smells amazing! Fantastic recipe. Thank you.
Lovely cake. Double the recipe & although it didn't look like much batter it rose nicely. Cooking this for my husband's birthday cake & was so impressed as it was flat across the top & looked amazing.
Thank you so much for this recipe ❤️
Beautiful tasting cake and very easy to make. My problem is the cooking time the middle with never cook properly and by the time it's cooked the edges are burnt and dry. What am I doing wrong? Should the butter be softened in step 1? Still tastes amazing and a favourite in this house.
OMG, this is the best Tea cake. I had been trying to find one like my nanna used to make and this is it. Even licking the spoon bought back memories! I added half a cup of sultanas to the batter.
Have been making this cake for years. Always double the recipe, and always comes out perfectly. Never fails to impress....highly recommend this recipe Use some foil over the top if you think cake need extra time at end of cooking

Double ingredients
120g butter
136g sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla essence
272g self raising flour
90g milk
Just fantastic!
Light, fluffy and delicious. I doubled recipe as suggested and cooked in a square cake tin. Cooked for about 35 minutes and it came out golden. I’ve just returned from shopping and heated a piece in the microwave for ten seconds, slapped on the butter and dusted with cinnamon sugar. Delicious.....I know I’m meant to be having tea but it goes awfully well with bubbles too! 😂😂😂
What is the time Of baking and preparation time please
